Traveling to see the Penguins

The first time I saw a penguin wasn’t in Antarctica. Is that a surprise? I thought they were only found in Antarctica. The opposite may be actually true. Despite there being millions of penguins in Antarctica they are not endemic to Antarctica, but instead found in the countries that border the icy continent all the way up to Galapagos at the equator. I wasn’t expecting to see Penguins in South Africa not far from Cape Town, and on a family trip to Australia. When I found out there were penguins in Australia we drove out to magical Philip Island where penguins parade in from the sea most evenings. After these experiences it was less of a surprise to find them in the islands south of Argentina.

How many kinds of penguins are there and where can you see them?

There are 18 different species of penguins. They can be found in various locations, including Antarctica, South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, South America, and the Galapagos Islands. They are:

1 Emperor Penguin

Where are the penguins in Australia? And what times to visit?

In Australia, penguins can be found on the island of Phillip Island, located in the state of Victoria. The island is home to a colony of Little Penguins, also known as Fairy Penguins, which is the smallest penguin species in the world. Visitors can see the penguins returning to the shore to nest at sunset all year round, but the best viewing time is during the summer months (October to April) when the penguins come ashore in larger numbers. The Phillip Island Nature Parks offers the Penguin Parade, a popular tourist attraction where visitors can watch the penguins come ashore at sunset.

Philip Island – Little Penguin also known as Fairy Penguin

What is the penguin in Philip island?

The penguin that is found on Phillip Island, in Victoria, Australia, is the Little Penguin (Eudyptula minor). It is also known as the Fairy Penguin, Blue Penguin or Little Blue Penguin. This is the smallest penguin species in the world, standing around 40 cm (16 inches) tall and weighing around 1 kg (2.2 lb). The species is found in south-eastern Australia and New Zealand. They are also called Little penguins because of their small size. Phillip Island is home to the largest colony of Little Penguins in the world, and the island’s visitors center offers night-time tours to see the penguins returning to their burrows on the beach.

Where are the penguins in South Africa and when can I see them?

In South Africa, penguins can be found at Boulders Beach, located in the Simon’s Town area near Cape Town. The beach is home to a colony of African Penguins, which are also known as Black-footed Penguins. The best time to see the penguins is during the breeding season, which typically runs from late October to April. During this time, visitors can see penguins nesting and caring for their chicks. The penguins can be viewed from a boardwalk that runs through the colony, and guided tours are also available. Additionally, you can visit the Boulders Penguin colony, which is part of the Table Mountain National Park, where you can see the penguins throughout the year.

Visiting the Penguins at the Boulders Penguin colony was very close to Table Mountain. I was easily able to visit both Table Mountain, Cape of Good Hope seeing an Ostrich and plenty of baboons as well. The penguins were in the grass and dirt in little hovels. The locals called them jackass penguins because of the funny donkey braying sound they make. They were super cute.

Where can I see the penguins in New Zealand and when?

New Zealand is home to three species of penguins. In New Zealand, penguins can be found on the Otago Peninsula in the South Island, specifically at the Royal Albatross Centre and the Yellow-eyed Penguin Reserve. The Yellow-eyed penguins, also known as Hoiho, are one of the rarest penguin species in the world, and can be viewed in the wild on guided tours. The best time to see the penguins is during the breeding season, which typically runs from October to March. During this time, visitors can see penguins nesting and caring for their chicks. Additionally, at the Oamaru Blue Penguin Colony, located in the North Otago region, you can see the little blue penguins (also known as the little penguin) all year round, but the best viewing time is at sunset when they return to the colony from a day of fishing in the sea.

Where can I see penguins in Argentina and when?

In Argentina, penguins can be found at Punta Tombo, located in the Patagonia region. The colony is home to the largest population of Magellanic Penguins in South America. The best time to see Emperor Penguins is during the breeding season, which typically runs from April to December, with the peak breeding period being from June to August. During this time, visitors can see Emperor Penguins nesting and caring for their chicks.

Visiting emperor penguins in Antarctica can be challenging and requires a lot of planning and specialized equipment. Emperor penguins breed on the sea ice, and their colonies are located in remote and inhospitable areas of the continent. Visitors can only access these colonies by taking a cruise ship or an expedition vessel that sails to the Antarctic Peninsula or the Weddell Sea region. These trips are expensive and are often sold out far in advance, so it’s important to plan ahead. Additionally, the best way to see emperor penguins is on guided tours led by specialized tour operators, who can provide expert guidance and equipment necessary to see these iconic birds in their natural habitat.

Is it true penguins are not endemic to Antarctica?

While penguins are often associated with Antarctica, they are not actually endemic to the continent. Endemic means that a species is found only in a specific geographic area and nowhere else in the world. Penguins are found in several regions of the Southern Hemisphere, including Antarctica, but also in South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, South America, and several islands in the southern Pacific and Atlantic Oceans.

In Antarctica, Emperor penguins are the only penguin species that breeds on the continent. Emperor penguins breed on the sea ice of Antarctica during the winter months, when temperatures can reach minus 50 degrees Celsius. The other penguin species that can be found in Antarctica are the Adelie penguin, Chinstrap penguin and Gentoo penguin, but they breed on nearby islands such as the South Shetland and South Orkney Islands.

Visitors can typically only see Emperor Penguins from a distance or on guided hikes led by experienced guides. Additionally, when visiting South Georgia, visitors should be aware that the island is also home to a large number of seals and seabirds, and it’s also a place of great historical significance and environmental importance.

How can I see the emperor penguins on Falkland Islands?

The Falkland Islands are not the natural habitat for Emperor penguins. Emperor penguins are only found in Antarctica and on South Georgia, as they require sea ice to breed.

The Falkland Islands are home to many other penguin species, such as rockhopper, gentoo, and magellanic penguins. Rockhopper penguins can be found on the coast and offshore islands, while gentoo and magellanic penguins are found in the interior of the islands. Visitors can see these penguins by taking guided tours or by visiting wildlife reserves such as Sea Lion Island or Volunteer Point.
